This program explores how power availability, rather than traditional construction activities, has become the dominant schedule and risk driver for hyperscale data center projects. It examines how grid interconnection constraints, the utility queue backlogs, evolving regulatory frameworks, and inaccurate load forecasting can push power delivery onto the critical path, particularly for projects exceeding 50–100 MW.
Participants will evaluate alternative power delivery strategies increasingly used to mitigate schedule and capacity risk when utility energization is delayed. These include behind‑the‑meter generation, non‑firm interconnections, power purchase agreements (PPAs), and hybrid solutions, with discussion focused on the technical, commercial, and operational tradeoffs of each approach.
Drawing on real‑world case studies, the session translates lessons learned into actionable guidance for owners, developers, contractors, and advisors. Topics include early power planning, realistic schedule assumptions, contract structuring, risk allocation, stakeholder and community engagement, and anticipating downstream dispute exposure.
